The IMCA SportMods were arguably the race of the night for the second consecutive week, as Jacob Jordan and Brandon Ferris led the field at the start of the race.

Jordan took the point at the start, as Ferris went three-wide with Doug Gardner and Rich Pavlicek for second. Gardner won the battle, and began to stalk Jordan for the lead early on in the twenty lap finale.

Gardner peeked to the inside of Jordan on a regular basis, while last week's winner Kelly Jacobson joined Ferris and Pavlicek in the battle for third.

The lead duo and the battle for third remained door-to-door each lap through the halfway point. Jacobson won the battle for third, as the leaders caught up to lapped traffic with seven laps left.

This allowed Jacobson to catch the leaders, as Gardner used the highside to briefly take the lead the following circuit.

Justin Jones then made it a four car battle for the victory with five laps remaining, and with heavy lapped traffic up ahead.

Gardner continued to show Jordan his right front wheel each lap as Jordan continued on to victory. Jacobson, Jones, and Pavlicek completed the top five.

The Minn-Kota Lightning Sprints made their first appearance at the Buffalo River quarter-mile this season, and it was Jason Berg and Alan Truscinski that led the field to green.

Wahpeton's Patrick Brejcha flipped his No. 60X machine on the initial start, but he emerged from his wrecked mount un-injured.

Berg led the opening lap on the restart, but it was third starting Dexter Dvergsten that took the lead on lap two.

Kelsi Pederson then moved in on Truscinski and Berg in the battle for second. Bryce Haugeberg joined that battle, which became a battle for third, as Truscinski took second.

Dvergsten worked lapped traffic to perfection as Haugeberg caught Truscinski in a bid for second.

The first caution just past the halfway point of the twenty lapper erased Dvergsten's advantage over the rest of the field.

Haugeberg stalked Dvergsten for the lead, as Alex Truscinski charged up to third. Dvergsten avoided disaster on the final lap, as a lapped car spun in front of him.

Dvergsten continued on to remain undefeated in three races with the Minn-Kota series in 2021. Alan and Alex Truscinski finished second and third respectively, while Pederson and Haugeberg completed the top five.

Andrew Tysdal and Larry Samuelson paced the field at the start of the fifteen lap Limited Late Model feature, with Tysdal leading the opening lap by a nose over fourth starting Ben Wolden.
Tysdal led the second circuit as well, but it was Wolden taking the point on lap three.

Only one caution slowed the race, as Wolden continued on to win for the second consecutive week over Scott Zimmerman, Zack Tysdal, Samuelson, and Andrew Tysdal.

Kyle Hallgren and Marv Priem made up the front row for the fifteen lap Hobby Stock feature, as Hallgren held off a hard charging Skyla Miller to lead the opening lap.

Skyla Miller and Will Miller went door-to-door on the second lap, as the latter took second on the second circuit.

Will Miller stalked Hallgren for the lead, as both were looking for their first career victories.

Will Miller took the lead with four laps remaining, and continued on to victory over Todd Gettel, Priem, Hallgren, and Andrea Jacobson.

John Current of Bemidji stormed from eleventh, and won a caution marred Short Tracker main event over Matt Pederson, Waylon Current, Curtis Huseth, and Levi Lease.

Race of the night had to be the SportMod feature. Longtime Buffalo River regulars Kelly Jacobson and Chris VanMil shared the front row for the twenty lap main event.

Jacobson took the early lead with VanMil and Vince Jegtvig close behind. Jacobson and VanMil stayed door-to-door lap after lap, with VanMil taking the lead on lap four.

Jacobson regained the point on the following lap, as the lead duo broke away from the rest of the field before a caution on lap seven.

VanMil spun as the field took the green in turn four on the ensuing restart, but the field realigned in the same order as the race got back underway.

Jegtvig took second and brought Torey Fischer with him as Kelly Jacobson pulled away up front.
VanMil rejoined the battle for second with Scott Jacobson and Doug Gardner as Kelly Jacobson continued to pull away.

Scott Jacobson eventually took second before VanMil and Gardner made contact and spun in turn three with eight to go.

Kelly Jacobson rebuilt his advantage on the restart, as Scott Jacobson won the battle for second.

Kelly Jacobson continued to win over his father Scott, Jegtvig, Fischer, and VanMil.

The Jacobson's did twin burn-outs on the frontstretch as it was Kelly's return to victory lane for the first time since beating a severe illness, and losing his infant son one week prior.

The IMCA Modified feature saw Nevada invader Kollin Hibdon and Jordan Sours lead the field to the green.

Hibdon wasted little time building a half-straightaway advantage over Sours and Jeff Odden.

Seventh starter Tyler Hall moved up to fourth in the opening laps, and closed in on Sours and Odden for second.

A caution on lap seven erased Hibdon's advantage, which was nearly a full straightaway at the time of the yellow flag.

Hall went three-wide with Sours and Odden, improving to third on the first lap after the caution, then began stalking Sours for second.

Hall was about to take second, before another caution just before the midway point of the twenty lap event.

Hall took second as Allen Kent and Brennan Borg moved in on Sours for third.

Hibdon continued on to victory over Hall, Kent, Sours, and Borg.

In the Limited Late Model feature, Scott Zimmerman led the opening lap, before Ben Wolden made a great pass off the top of turn four to take the lead at the end of the second circuit.

Wolden cruised to victory over Zimmerman, Zender, Samuelson, and Andrew Tysdal, in a race that went green-to-checkered after a spin by Zender on the initial start.

Scott Herron made the trip from Brainerd, charging from fifth, and taking the lead from race long leader Brad Orvedal with two laps left to win the fifteen lap Hobby Stock feature.

William Herron and Ryan Kleinschmidt also made the trip from Brainerd to finish third and fourth respectively, while Caleb Gardner rounded out the top five.

Devin Goulet led all fifteen laps to win the Short Tracker main event over Hunter Goulet, Adrian Kubitz, Levi Lease, and Dan Beckman.

GLYNDON, Minn. – Buffalo River Race Park continues to be a winter wonderland for snowmobile racing enthusiasts. The speedway has played host to ice oval snowmobile racing in recent years with its nationally recognized blue ice covering the high-banked quarter-mile oval. This year, speedway general manager, Kevin Nathe, is switching things up by bringing back the fan-favorite Amsoil Championship Snocross series this weekend, beginning on Friday. ​

“Being in the racing promotions industry, this is such a unique event that separates Buffalo River from other facilities. Not many tracks get the opportunity to host Snocross,” said Nathe, who is approaching 13 years managing the motorsports park that lies three miles east of Glyndon. 

This weekend’s event will be the fourth time Buffalo River Race Park has hosted the country’s premier snowmobile racing touring series, but the first since 2014. 

The event, billed as the Country Cat Snocross National presented by Thunder Seed, will be unprecedented as it will be a three-day event, compared to the traditional two-day format. 

“To have three pro open main events on the same weekend hasn’t happened but once or twice in the history of the sport,” said Nathe.

Qualifying for the pro open and pro lite divisions will be taking place during the day on Friday and Saturday, along with racing for the amateur divisions. Racing for the pro open and pro lites will begin at 6pm on Friday and Saturday. Sunday will host the pro open division only, with racing beginning at 10am. Sunday’s event is a makeup from the event in Duluth, Minn. that was canceled due to a winter storm. 

Buffalo River Race Park’s last dirt track race of the season was held over Labor Day weekend. Since then, Nathe has been going full throttle getting the facility prepared for the Snocross weekend.

“After the dirt track racing season was over, we started hauling out all of the barriers and infield tire markers. The process of making snow started around Thanksgiving,” continued Nathe. “It’s been a non-stop grind of making snow since then. You can’t have too much snow for an event like this.”

Nathe said the track layout should be one of the biggest tracks the speedway has had, matching their course in 2012, which was the largest to date. Nathe estimates that eight to 10 feet of snow covered the dirt track before the Snocross course groomers came in to begin building the course.  

Buffalo River Race Park is one of the most fan-friendly facilities the Championship Snocross series visits. It’s one of the few that has substantial indoor seating and viewing. Nathe has renovated the indoor seating area since the dirt track racing season ended to make it even more accommodating for fans. Numerous portable heaters will be scattered throughout the grandstand area to keep fans warm, including on the Turn Four patio deck.
