Carlsrud claims first career win at Buffalo River Race Park

​GLYNDON, Minn. – Buffalo River Race Park’s 65th anniversary season kicked off Saturday night, switching to weekly Saturday night racing – instead of Sunday night – a first for the longest running speedway in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

The INEX Legend feature fired off with young up-and-comers Ryan Braseth of Ulen, Minn. and Tye Wilke of Detriot Lakes, Minn. fighting for the race lead. Braseth held the lead but had Wilke all over him for the first half of the race until Wilke was forced to pull off after suffering damage to his car.

Things heated up with five laps to go as Brody Carlsrud and Andrew Jochim reeled in Braseth. The trio of drivers went three wide down the back straightaway and made contact. Jochim and Braseth got the worst of it. Braseth was towed off the speedway and Jochim was called for the caution, putting him to the back of the pack.

The 15-year-old Carlsrud showed the way as the green flag waved once again and held off Fargo’s Kaitlyn Skalicky to claim his first career win at Buffalo River.

After the first night of action, Rob VanMil has already equaled his Buffalo River Race Park win total from the 2018 season. The Barnesville, Minn., driver dominated the 20-lap IMCA modified feature en route to picking up the win.

Dan Dowling of Davenport, N.D., raced to the IMCA sportmod feature win. Dowling started on the outside of the front row and grabbed the early lead in his NDSU Bison-themed No. 2D machine. Dowling had a late challenge in the form of Chris VanMil with five laps remaining, but Dowling used his momentum to hold on to the top spot.

Backing up his win Friday night at Red River Valley Speedway, Adam Goff of Minot, N.D., picked up the IMCA hobby stock feature win. Kyle Hallgren of Hankinson led the opening lap, but fourth-place starter Goff came charging up through the field. Goff took the lead from Hallgren on lap two before checking out from the rest of the field. Goff picked up the win by nearly a half lap over the rest of the field.

Casey Stremick of Harwood, N.D., used the high side of the speedway to power into the lead in the Sport Compact feature and went on to take the win. Joe Lewis won the slingshot feature.
